It was worth the drive to London for Bloordale’s Major Peewee Select team last weekend as they became the first Bloordale team to win a tournament in 2014.
Coach Mike Woolcock said that the boys have done well this season, but they really stepped up their game for this tournament winning all 5 games against some good opposition.
The tournament started with a nail biting 4-3 win against the East York Bulldogs Friday night. This game was a battle of inches with both teams putting up strong pitching and solid defense. On Saturday morning the bats came alive in game two against Ajax with the boys posting 18 runs in the first inning. The final game of Saturday against Brantford was more competitive but the Bloordale hitting machine continued to march on. The solid defense kept Brantford off the board with a final score of 13-0. The team had achieved the goal of all teams in tournaments … playing on Sunday and not losing a game in the process.
The semi-final on Sunday morning against North Toronto was another game with solid pitching, good defense and hits throughout the batting lineup. A final score of 13-3 sent Bloordale to the championship game to face Brantford for the second time.
With a full pitching roster and hot bats, Bloordale was in a strong position but Brantford is a team with deep pitching, a strong batting line up and revenge on their minds. The Bloordale pitchers had another strong showing and were supported by some spectacular plays in the outfield and the infield. Double plays in innings 5 and 6 by the Bloordale infield should have been enough to shut down Brantford but they kept coming in the 7th inning fighting to the last out. In the end Bloordale’s pitching strength and rock solid defense prevailed. The final score 10-7.
Congratulations boys on a fantastic weekend of ball!
