Umpire does double duty with homemade drag

by | Jun 19, 2013

Bloordale’s Blue Crew always seems ready to pitch in and help get a game started …. even if it means grooming the field.

Zac Kelcher-McConnell, a level 2.3 umpire, was working a Rookie Select game recently and was caught on ‘film’ helping groom the diamond at Neilson. (Zac also spends a lot of time as as member of Bloordale’s Dust Bunnies, the unofficial Grounds Crew of Bloordale who have been seen at all of our diamonds at all hours of the day and night working on infields, mounds, and plate areas.)

Seems the infield at Neilson was a little hard from all the rain and heat recently and the city hasn’t had a chance to get a groomer to the diamond. Rookie coach (and pitching machine feeder) Cam Summers, who also doubles as our Co-Convenor for Rookie HL, created a homemade hand drag out of a piece of fence from his backyard and some ‘locally found’ weights.

As reports go …. it seemed to have worked. The surface was much better to play on and safer for the players as the possibility of bad hops was reduced.

Just another example of Bloordale volunteers going extra mile for our players.
